Dear Mr. Savage, I enjoyed the meditative quality of the poem, incorporating pardoxical terms that nonetheless remain humble servants to the visuals, “cruel beauty”, “ruthless passion (not deminished by softness). Reminds me of one special dream I had as a boy or young teenager, and of another special dream that I turned into a poem. Both dreams basked in the aloneness you revel in in your poem. In the first dream, I get off of a school bus in the middle of a desert, and am peaceful and sense serene beauty, rather than expected fear of abandonment. In the other dream (occurred during young adulthood) I am alone but sense a lover approaching, enhancing rather than disturbing my “warm aloneness”. That second dream had 3 stages: achievement stage, contemplative stage, love stage. Your poem suggests that naked/stark contemplation may be needed as a base of true love (whether love of art, things beautiful, or another person), and this resonates well with my two special dreams.
Thanks for sharing your poem, and for positively triggering these subjective experiences in me. And congrats on winning the monthly prize.
